StB Reading (the “St. Bernard’s Reading App”) · Last updated: July 19, 2026
StB Reading is a reading-log app for the St. Bernard’s school community. It lets students
track the books they read, rate and review them, and see school-wide leaderboards. This
policy explains what information the app collects, how it is used, and the choices you have.
We keep data collection to the minimum needed to run the app, and we never sell
personal information.
Information we collect
- Account information. A username, and a first name (and, where provided, a last name). Older students sign up with a school email address (@stbernards.org); younger students may use a username only. We also store a grade or class year when provided, and the password you set (stored securely as a one-way hash — we cannot see it).
- Reading activity. The books you mark as Read, Reading, or Wishlist; the star ratings you give; and any written reviews you choose to post.
- Books you add. If you add a book that isn’t already in the library, the title and details you submit are stored so the book is available to the community.
- Basic technical data. Standard information needed to operate a mobile app and its backend (for example, authentication tokens and error logs).
We do not collect precise location, contacts, photos, or advertising identifiers, and the app contains no third-party advertising.
How we use information
- To create and secure your account and sign you in.
- To show your personal bookshelf and reading statistics.
- To display community features — reviews, ratings, and leaderboards — within the St. Bernard’s community.
- To send account-related emails, such as a verification code at sign-up (for users who sign up with an email address).
- To operate, maintain, and improve the app, and to respond to support requests.
What is visible to others
StB Reading is a shared reading community. Your display name, ratings, written
reviews, and leaderboard standing are visible to other signed-in members of the
St. Bernard’s community. Please don’t include private or sensitive information in a review.
Your email address and password are never shown to other users.
How information is shared
We share information only with the service providers that help us run the app, and only as needed:
- Google Firebase (Authentication, Firestore database, and Cloud Functions) — hosts the app’s accounts and data. See Google’s privacy policy at firebase.google.com/support/privacy.
- Google Books — used to look up book details when you search to add a book.
- Twilio SendGrid — sends verification emails to users who sign up with an email address.
- Anthropic — a school administrator may use AI-assisted tools to help manage the app (for example, to look up or update accounts and books). When used, relevant account and reading data may be processed to carry out the administrator’s request.
- Amazon — some books include a “Buy on Amazon” link. Tapping it opens Amazon’s website in your browser; Amazon’s own privacy policy then applies. We do not share your account data with Amazon.
We may also disclose information if required by law, or to protect the rights, safety, and
security of our users and the app. We do not sell personal information, and we do
not use it for third-party advertising.
Children’s privacy
StB Reading is intended for use by St. Bernard’s students, including children, under the
oversight of their school and, where appropriate, their parents or guardians. We collect
only the limited information described above, use it solely to operate the app’s reading
and community features, and never use children’s information for advertising or sell it.
If you are a parent or guardian and would like to review or delete your child’s
information, please contact us using the details below.
Data retention
We keep account and reading information for as long as the account is active. When an
account is deleted, its login and associated profile and reading data are removed. Some
information may remain briefly in backups or logs before being overwritten in the ordinary
course of operations.
Security
We use industry-standard measures provided by our infrastructure providers to protect
information, including encrypted connections and secure, hashed password storage. No system
is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your information from unauthorized access.
Your choices and rights
- You can edit your profile information and delete your reviews from within the app.
- You can request that your account and associated data be deleted by contacting us or the school administrator.
- You can request a copy of the personal information we hold about you.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we’ll revise the “Last updated”
date above and, for significant changes, provide notice within the app or by email where
appropriate.
